About Dr. Lewis
- Biography:
- Grand Montecito's own Dr. Lewis, like many veterinarians, showed an interest in animal health care from a young age. Dr. Lewis has always felt a desire to help those around him, so his path to the veterinary field was a clear one.
When Dr. Lewis was around 5 years old he started showing interest in veterinarymedicine. He always loved to help people and to help animals, and his family pointed out that a veterinarian does both, you help both worlds. A veterinarian gives their heart to both humans and animals, so that was something that stuck with him.
His interest in veterinary care was cultivated throughout his youth, but Dr. Lewis said that his grandmother was a heavy influence on him as well.
When his grandmother passed awayhewas having a pretty difficult time with it. She was always a little hard on him because she saw potential, and she pushed him to become better. She was a big influence on him and really instilled in him that mindset of always improving.
Originally from Steelton, Pennsylvania, a small town outside of Harrisburg, Dr. Lewis said that he has enjoyed being a Las Vegan and that his journey here was incredible.
Dr. Lewis went to college at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He spent five years there and then worked through a summer program in order to get into veterinary school at Tuskegee University in Alabama. From there he got recruited to come out to Las Vegas in 2002.
Dr. Lewis first worked at Pebble Maryland Animal Hospital when he arrived in Las Vegas, and said he has fond memories of the people and pets he worked with there.
Dr. Lewis was under Dr. Daniel Diaz's wing at Pebble Maryland when he first came out to Las Vegas and he really showed Dr. Lewis what it takes to manage an animal hospital. Then he was called on to come to Grand Montecito and help build
this place.
Though he was excited to be involved in creating a new animal hospital, the transition wasn't always so easy for Dr. Lewis and his family.
When Grand Montecito first opened up, he was nervous, excited, and a little scared because he was leaving my first job in Las Vegas,. He loved working at Pebble Maryland. There was a lot of comfort there in knowing what the daily routine was like, but coming out to this side of town and basically being a pioneer was a big change for him.
The transition across town was tough for Dr. Lewis' family too. But it was all definitely rewarding as soon as he started seeing people coming in and out with happy faces and healthy pets.
Since establishing Grand Montecito Animal Hospital, Dr. Lewis said he has been lucky to work with excellent people on the staff, and that he truly values the relationships that he has formed through working at the hospital.
When he hires people he tells them that he's a workaholic, and that he wants to work and have a good time. He doesn't ever have to work the staff, they do a wonderful job by themselves. Everybody plays an important part at Grand
Montecito.
As anyone who has met him knows, family plays a big part in all phases of Dr. Lewis' life. As a father, he relishes the opportunity to spend time with his children and help them grow and mature.
He has three kids, two daughters and a son, all teenagers. At the time he moved here he was also taking care of his sister who was 17, so he had a full house.
She's since moved out so it's down to hid children, but they do a lot for him.
Dr. Lewis knows that pet owners have a lot of choices when it comes to veterinary care, but he was confident that Grand Montecito is providing the highest quality service available. But furthermore, Dr. Lewis said that Grand Montecito provides something unique as well.
Dr. Lewis thinks GMAH gives a unique experience of family. To him, family is the best thing on the planet. They don't just get you in and process you, they really care. The hospital tries to welcome you in and get to know you, they know that pets are like four legged children to people. When people come to the
hospital Dr. Lewis tells them that when they walk through the doors, their pet becomes his baby, and when they walk back out they become your baby again.
That's the kind of atmosphere they try to create. That's Dr. Lewis' philosophy, to give them his heart and his all.
