• Getting to Know Dr. Bivens

GMAH's Dr. Bivens grew up not far from Las Vegas in Riverside, California, but it was a long journey through his medical career that brought him to us.

"I did my first year of undergrad at the University of Kentucky," Dr. Bivens said, "and from there I transferred to Tuskegee University where I spent a few years finishing my degree. Then I continued my education and got my DVM at the Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine."

While Dr. Bivens has always had a natural predilection for science, he says it was a love and passion for animals that led him to becoming a veterinarian.

"I've always had love and passion for animals," he said. "There's actually a story from my childhood, I had a cat that I loved very much when I was about 6 years old, and he was poisoned by someone in the neighborhood. I remember riding my bike up to the driveway and seeing that my cat was having a seizure. I remember feeling so helpless, like I couldn't do anything for him. Ever since then I've just wanted to be able to do something in a situation like that. My parents told me I could be an animal doctor, back then I didn't even know what a veterinarian was, so you could say that's when it all started for me."

Though the majority of his family still lives in southern California, Dr. Bivens said he likes life in Las Vegas.

"It's a very highly traveled to city, so friends and family are always visiting," he said.

Family is something that is very important to Dr. Bivens.

"I'm the youngest of five, so I'm the baby of the family," he said. "Family is a really important aspect of life to me. My parents actually just moved to Salt Lake City in Utah, so that was very cool to have them closer by."

Dr. Bivens also said that he's had a great time getting to know his Grand Montecito family as well.

"It's great here at Grand Montecito," he said, "it's a family atmosphere and everybody is always happy to be here and has a smile on their face. Not only do all the doctors click, but the staff does as well. It's a warm environment and we're all really happy with the way it's working out. We all love our jobs and it's a great atmosphere."

Dr. Bivens played baseball for two years and studied Animal and Poultry Science while at Tuskegee University. He also earned the Internal Medicine Award during his time there.

When Dr. Bivens is not working, you can find him watching and playing baseball, riding motorcycles, and BBQ'ing. He has a one year old English Bulldog named Chubbs.
